Divest Mount Allison

Our Demands
Fossil Fuel Divestment
We demand an immediate freeze on new investments in the fossil fuel industry. We demand immediate sale of endowment investments in the top 200 fossil fuel companies (~$8 million as of 2022). We demand sale of all fossil fuel holdings within the next 5 years. This has been a demand since 2013. 15.5% of Canadian universities have already divested or committed to divestment (McGregor Corson, 2025)
GHG Emissions Targets
We demand that Mount Allison University commits to numerical and scientifically based greenhouse gas emission targets and commits to working toward a net-zero campus, by at least the international target of 2050. The majority of Canadian universities (76.2%) have emissions targets. Mount Allison does not (McGregor Corson, 2025).
Climate Plan
We demand that Mount Allison University create a climate plan, an actionable pathway to achieve net-zero and emission reduction targets as well as other holistic sustainability initiatives. Third party auditing will be required to understand current energy usage and assess the feasibility and timeline of various projects. 70.2% of Canadian universities have a climate plan; Mount Allison has none (McGregor Corson, 2025). A climate plan would need to be regularly updated and adaptive and set long term priorities in order to facilitate successful adaption and mitigation efforts.
Climate Change Coordintor
We demand that Mount Allison University hire a full time climate change coordinator or create an office of sustainability. Lack of capacity is currently a major limitation in Facilities Management's ability to carry out sustainability initiatives and a climate coordinator would be able to oversee the creation and implementation of the climate plan and apply for funding to support future sustainability and climate justice initiatives. It is also suggested that a climate coordinator would be able to facilitate better environmental and climate change related projects and goals with the municipality of Tantramar. 67.9% of Canadian universities have a climate change coordinator or similar position (McGregor Corson, 2025).
